Reviews

I have decided to start practicing what I preach about book reviewing. Book reviews are essential in helping a writer. While some people don't consider the reviews when it comes to deciding whether or not to read a particular book, others do. Reviews help in ranking, but they also help a writer to know what the readers think of their work.

Some reviews can be overly critical, and sometimes cruel. Whereas other reviews are inciteful and well-intentioned. The positive reviews, even when they have a fewer number of stars help the writer to learn what works, and what doesn't work for his/her readers. It helps the writer to improve their craft.

I hope when I write reviews, they are informative to both the reader and the author. I try to be encouraging and supportive of the writer, even when I do give a low rating.

I have written a few reviews on Amazon, but have hesitated to write many because as a writer, my reviews could be seen as 'reciprocating reviews', or 'doing a favor for a friend'. I've come to the conclusion people will think what they want regardless. When I read  a book, I may as well write a few words about how well I liked the book, what worked for me, and what didn't. I may write a few stories, but I am a reader first.

Last night, early this morning I began reading Sarah Bridgeton's novella The Undiscovered Novelist. I read nearly three quarters of the way through it before I finally carried myself to bed at 8:30 this morning. I finally finished it earlier today, then I looked up the author on her website. I look forward to reading much more from this stay-at-home mom, turned novelist. My review follows below.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the week! :-)

The Undiscovered Novelist, by Sarah Bridgeton

This novella opens with Jordyn Simmons arguing with her mother, Debra, over Jordyn's decision to move to Florida with her son's father, Tyler. Debra is concerned her daughter is sacrificing her independence to move with her non-Jewish boyfriend, with no plans of marriage.

Other than being on the outs with her mother, Jordyn is on top of the world. She is happily in love with a wonderful boyfriend, who is supportive of her aspirations to become a best-selling author. Together, they have a beautiful family with their son. She works as a paralegal, at Tyler's firm. Her sister, Naomi, who is a dentist, also lives in Florida.

Ms. Bridgeton takes us through both Jordyn and Dabra's lives from both ladies' points of view. She interweaves these two stories beautifully.
Jordyn finally completes her novel, then goes through the struggles of finding an agent or publisher to read her manuscript. The author leads us on a tour of the fascinating world of the publishing industry, including the dreaded 'slush pile', a wonderful testament to writers to never give up on their dreams.

I felt for Debra when she lost her job. She's falsely accused, and then they try to cut her off with a small severance package, nine days out from a five year award she's earned. She refuses to sign anything until after she speaks with her attorney. He comes through for her, and the company agrees to settle in her favor.

Debra struggles emotionally after working so many years as a single mother of two, to end up being fired. At her age, it is difficult to find another job. A publisher, who seems to have a bad attitude discovers her reading in a coffee shop. He strikes up a conversation with her. She agrees to work for him as an assistant to his prized editor, who is on maternity leave.

Debra proves to be an asset to the publishing house, convincing them to sponsor a writing contest, hoping to discover 'the next big talent'. She has no clue her daughter has entered her manuscript to the contest, as she hasn't spoken with her in over two years. She is concerned how this may look to her boss, whom she's come to respect, as well as hoping it may help to restore her rocky relationship with her daughter.

My overall conclusion: The Undiscovered Novelist is a heartwarming story of determination to succeed and forgiveness. The characters are authentic, and make the reader care about their individual stories. I recommend this story to readers, as well as aspiring authors. I look forward to reading her novel
Next Year in Israel, which is the story Jordyn submits to the contest.
I give this story five stars.

While on a road trip with my husband last year, I went to bed with a migraine. I got up an hour later with an entire cast of characters screaming at me. I had no choice but to write, if for no other reason than to get them to shut up, already! I wrote non-stop for three days, frantically writing as fast as I could, to get the entire story written. I was afraid the characters would leave me, before I finished the job.

Now, the entire story was written in long-hand, and I know I burned through a package of ink pens in three days. Yes, it only took three days to write it, but it has taken months to fine tune it. When we arrived back home, it took both my husband and myself another three days to decipher everything I had scrawled all over the pages, and it was a daymn mess!

As we were translating my own personal font, I typed it into a file. I thought surely the story was finished, and actually thought it would merely be a short story of maybe a few thousand words. Nearly thirty thousand words later, I published it as an ebook on Smashwords, on 31 December 2011. Then, in January, of this year I published it in paperback. It is now on Kindle ebook, and in paperback at Amazon. Thus, A Piney Woods Christmas novella was born.

Last night I released it in a hardbound version (shown above), on Lulu. You can purchase it by clicking on the button below.

It doesn't end there, the characters continue screaming at me, fifty thousand words later. I'm in the process of expanding this story into a full novel. I've found an amazing copy editor, and she'll be helping me get the final manuscript ready for publishing.

At this time, I'd like to thank every single person who has read this story, encouraged me, shared posts on Facebook, and tweets. Your support has kept me going. Thank you for believing in me and this story!

I wish y'all a wonderful weekend. Love and blessings to all.

Everyone seems to have a few favorite things. Mine are quite simple outside my family, of course. My favorite things are the written word and the art writers choose to cover that work.

I like to write a story and I love to read them. One of my favorite stories I've read recently and have read several times, is R.K.Finnell's Kickshaw Candies.

Kickshaw Candies is a captivating little story, which invites the reader into a magical candy shop in the small town of Baile, and into the lives of the characters. It is not, however a children's fairy tale. This is for more mature readers, who enjoy a taste of the dark chocolates. The story is plot driven and has all the magical elements of Celtic folklore and even a bit of Gaelic.

Teagan O'Brien, the knowledgeable proprietor of the candy shop knows exactly which candy you will need or enjoy the most. The entire town is filled with dark secrets which threaten the existence of all humanity. Even the characters, themselves are unaware of the secrets they possess.

Kickshaw candies draws you in and holds you captive until the conclusion. Kickshaw Candies is currently available at Amazon in ebook and paperback versions. Order yours today! http://www.amazon.com/Kickshaw-Candies-ebook/dp/B004U359HW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

But, it doesn't end there! Book two in the series is just around the corner and soon to be released. The Plague Son. I can hardly wait until its release!

In search of the Death Bringers, Fáelán discovers a truth within himself that could evoke the end of humanity. Now he must either embrace what he is, or bring Death to its knees.

This fabulous cover is designed by Dark Dawn Creations. I have commissioned her to do a cover for Spirit of the Piney Woods and can't wait to see what she creates for my work. She takes pride in her art and you can see for yourself the quality of her work by visiting her website. http://www.darkdawncreations.com

I will bring you more news of these talented ladies, soon. Until then, I wish all ya'll a wonderful week!

Ever wonder what it would be like to take a trip back in time? Back to the simpler ways of life...

Lonesome Dove is one of my favorite stories of all time. Larry McMurtry penned a classic when he wrote this epic Western saga.
Did he realize at the time he was writing it that it would one day be a classic? Or, did he just dream up the story, and as I do have a burning desire to grab pen and paper, allowing the pen to blaze a trail across the paper into the Western frontier? The latter, is what I envision when I think of how he wrote this story.

I know it is a fictional story, but I would so love to live in Lonesome Dove, within the pages of that classic. I know times were hard back then, but times are hard now, too. We have different hardships today, than in yesteryear.

Today, we worry over car payments, home mortgages (if we even own a home), job security, health insurance, electricity, gas, water, sewage, garbage disposal and a plethora of other concerns for basic living requirements. Then, we have concerns over who we are going to elect for president, world hunger, world peace and civil rights.

It would be so nice to take off on my horse for a trip to the store, and not have to worry about fueling up at the gas station. I wouldn't need as much at the store as I do now, because I would grow most of my own food. I wouldn't need to worry about corporations putting hormones, dyes, and other toxins into my food. As long as I have a steady supply of ink and paper, I'll be a happy girl!

Gus and I (Not the one in the story), my husband, Gus, and I could ride out to check on the livestock and maybe get lost on our way back to the cabin. Yep, we could mosey on down to the creek for a bit of skinny dippin', then just lie atop our saddle blankets sippin' sweet tea from our canteens.

We'd be so far out, who would need clothes? ;D Just some of my musings for the day. For now, I'm going to eat Chinese with Gus, my daughter and grandbabies.

I hope ya'll have a lovely evening!

Seriously? Autumn is here, already! Most of the schools have already started. My grandson will begin Preschool next week. Am I ready for that? I reckon whether I'm ready for it or not, he will be going.

My little buddy has grown up. Well, I know not fully, but enough that he has become his own little person. He has his own little ideas, personality and goals. Yes, a four year old has ideas and goals.

Joseph will be five in November. He's faced many challenges and has conquered them all. He still faces challenges each day, but he is no longer afraid of them. He faces them head on, like a bull in a china closet, at times.

Joseph began life like any other baby. Everything was going smoothly in his developmental stages, until he received too many vaccines in a single office visit. Within minutes of receiving the vaccines he began running a high fever. Yes, I know they say children often run a fever with vaccines. This was NOT normal.

We spent the night in the emergency room with an eighteen month old who was completely lethargic and running dangerously high fever. He remained lethargic for more than a week. Once he finally began coming out of it, he could not speak. Not one word could he utter.

I know you may say that eighteen month old children do not have much of a vocabulary. I'll put it this way, he was speaking in short, but complete sentences. He spoke like a three year old before receiving the vaccines.

After receiving the vaccines, he uttered not one word until about a year ago. It literally took the doctor nearly a year before he finally took us seriously when we told him, "This is NOT normal!" At which point he wrote a referral for Speech and Occupational therapy.

He still receives Speech therapy two days each week, and Occupational Therapy once weekly. He has grown so much physically, as well as emotionally and has become much more confident. Will he continue to face challenges? Absolutely. What will we do? Whatever it takes to help him lead as normal and productive life possible for him.

All children are different. All children are special and have basic needs. Am I trying to change anyone's beliefs about immunizations? Absolutely not. What I am saying is that all parents should educate themselves about vaccinations and not be afraid to ask questions. Do not stop asking questions until you have received the answers you are seeking.

Public schools cannot keep your child from attending school if they do not have their vaccinations. Do not allow them to tell you that the law requires it. Check with your state health department. There are exemptions, such as religious beliefs, allergic reactions and others.

If your child has been injured as a result of receiving vaccines, contact the Unites States Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines (ACCV). Know your rights as a parent. Be informed.

I am also working on The S.L.U.T.'S. Memoires (Southern Lady Under Tremendous Stress) Fiction Novel based on actual events about a young Southern Lady Under Tremendous Stress.

Discover how Lacey finds the faith and inner strength to face the ugly rumors of the entire town after the death of her beloved husband, while raising her children.

"This part of my life seems only an illusion, yet I know I lived it, because I feel it deep within my spirit and with each breath I take. We were real, even though you were taken far too soon. No matter what happens in this life, I will be okay, because you loved me and I know that you love me still. Time, distance, nor the bitter cold hands of death can take that away. ‎I was your home and you were mine...if only we could turn back the hands of time...when you looked into my eyes and whispered my name...I felt your touch...tasted your kiss...in my heart you will remain. Being Christian does not give one the power to know everything. NEVER judge a book by it's cover."~Eilish Frazier ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Okay, here's the deal. I've not been very faithful about writing this blog thingy. I think my last posting was in January. Hahaha I am going to try my best to commit to at least once each week, and see which way the cat jumps. ;D

For the most part, I post regularly on Facebook, but I've been advised that I really need to make a more diligent effort to submit regular blog postings to keep you, my readers informed of current events.

So, I'll say in my best Southern drawl, I'm gonna try my best to keep you informed and entertained. I may even let ya'll in on a few secrets here and there. ;D

Until next time, ya'll be safe. Remember, the young'uns are back in school. I know this time of year is crazy, with after school extracurricular activities, and that is even more reason to SLOW DOWN. Pay attention in school zones. Nothing is worth a child's life. Let's all have a safe and happy school year.

Ya'll have a great weekend filled with all the blessings of love, peace and joy.

See ya soon! MUAHHH

The Year In Review
2011 was a crazy year filled with many changes and remarkable transformation on every possible level. I had some major life changes and was forced to dig deep within myself to heal old wounds while I struggled to write stories which made me go to an even deeper level to connect with my characters without confusing the two. Which was also very liberating. I was able to do some spiritual house cleaning and purge myself of the negativity that had invaded my life. We all have those irritating things we face in life which attack us from all angles and we can choose to become bitter or better. The choice is ours alone to make.
I moved from the country to Salina Bay in the Spring and worked night and day on TP3, while I battled pneumonia. During the Summer I continued to work on TP3 and I began The S.L.U.T.'S. Memoires. In the Fall, I welcomed a new granddaughter into the world. I also began working outside the home, again. Which helps me to get out of the house a bit.
November added another year, more gray hair wrinkles and weight to my rapidly growing collection. :D One of my grandsons, Joseph and I went to Chuck E Cheese two nights in a row to celebrate our birthdays, which are a week apart. He has asked about Chuck E Cheese every day of the world since then and we've been forced to inform him that Chuck E is on vacation until further notice! :D
December brought me A Piney Woods Christmas novella and the online ebook publication on New Year's Eve! A very nice ending to such a challenging year!!!!
